Are Facebook Ads Going to Zero?

I saw this a few days ago, but passed on it until I caught it on another site. In many cases, this is indicative of too many VC dollars chasing too few really good money making ideas. Ultimately, unless something changes, social networking sites will enjoy massive pages views, but just aren’t going to be big money generators in the near term - either through ads or subscription fees. If for no other reason than that the demographic using these sites regularly are not the big spenders that advertising departments like to chase. You’re better off building a kick ass automotive website :)

How the Google generation thinks differently

How the Google generation thinks differently - Times Online

Here’s a nifty account that is somewhat reminiscent of the Don Tapscott event that I went to at AOL (or what I remember of it anyway). I see this Digital Native sort of attitude from my sons - primarily the eldest (14). Although the tone of this article is one of mild shock and disbelief, my wife and I (both work for technology companies) take a certain pride in our sons’ abilities, especially given that he doesn’t really seem to be interested in following either of us into a technical field - although I’m fairly certain that his Mom will keep trying to push things that way :)

Yahoo! re-enters merger talks with Time Warner - Times Online

:::sigh:::

This just has disaster written all over it. While I would not personally have been dismayed by a similar move a few months - or longer - ago, however Yang & Co. aren’t working from a position of strength and I think that any tie-up now could potentially be trouble.

Think Before You Voicemail

I’ve been way ahead of the curve on this one for years. I hate VM. Detest it. Nothing is worse than wasting time playing phone tag. This is something that I could definitely live without - and in case you’re wondering, I’m really bad about responding to it - just ask my wife :)

Online Office Suites

3:42 pm July 2, 2008

Okay, so let me backtrack a little bit on that last post. I do think it’s nifty for folks who need the enterprise class solution that Office is. However, there is also a burgeoning list of free office applications - Web 2.0 as well as fat - that more than meet the mark for home use. I’ve used Open Office quite a bit on my Ubuntu machine (which I recently fixed, thank you very much) and it gets better and better as time goes by. The web 2.0 list is growing all the time with Google and a host of others (I like Writely) supplying solid office applications.

I just wanted to make it clear that I wasn’t a MS-or-die type :)

Microsoft Launches Consumer Subscription Offering That Combines Microsoft Office and Windows Live OneCare: Microsoft Equipt gives consumers powerful productivity and security protection technologies in a single package through Circuit City.

This looks like it might be interesting, at least for home use. And the price ain’t bad either.

Introduction to the Wikinomics Playbook / Wikinomics

I fumbled the ball last week and didn’t blog about Don Tapscott coming to AOL and giving a nice presentation covering a number of his books, but centering on Wikinomics. I had seen him at another AOL event in the Autumn of last year and was impressed, but I thought that he did an even better job this time. I’ve seen a number of good speakers at AOL over the years, but it’s always these folks who get us to stand back, take a deep breath and look at how time has passed and what changes have taken place and put all of that in perspective.

Who’s Next to Go at Yahoo as Reorg Looms?

Who’s Next to Go at Yahoo as Reorg Looms? | Kara Swisher | BoomTown | AllThingsD

I’ve tried to avoid all of the swirl surrounding the implosion going on over at Yahoo, but it’s pretty tough with the media circus and affected friends and acquaintances going on about it. For a change, it feels good not to be in the media/blog gunsites (as AOL often is), but having been in that boat (perhaps still being in it!) I do feel for what the rank and file must be going through. Yahoo has a strong and proud tradition that seems to be turning to dust before our eyes - and that’s a hard thing to watch if you’ve spent the last 10 years helping to build the business.

One thing is for sure - even for us at AOL - things aren’t likely to remain status quo in the internet business.
