I saw this a few days ago, but passed on it until I caught it on another site. In many cases, this is indicative of too many VC dollars chasing too few really good money making ideas. Ultimately, unless something changes, social networking sites will enjoy massive pages views, but just aren’t going to be big money generators in the near term - either through ads or subscription fees. If for no other reason than that the demographic using these sites regularly are not the big spenders that advertising departments like to chase. You’re better off building a kick ass automotive website

Here’s a nifty account that is somewhat reminiscent of the Don Tapscott event that I went to at AOL (or what I remember of it anyway). I see this Digital Native sort of attitude from my sons - primarily the eldest (14). Although the tone of this article is one of mild shock and disbelief, my wife and I (both work for technology companies) take a certain pride in our sons’ abilities, especially given that he doesn’t really seem to be interested in following either of us into a technical field - although I’m fairly certain that his Mom will keep trying to push things that way

Okay, so let me backtrack a little bit on that last post. I do think it’s nifty for folks who need the enterprise class solution that Office is. However, there is also a burgeoning list of free office applications - Web 2.0 as well as fat - that more than meet the mark for home use. I’ve used Open Office quite a bit on my Ubuntu machine (which I recently fixed, thank you very much) and it gets better and better as time goes by. The web 2.0 list is growing all the time with Google and a host of others (I like Writely) supplying solid office applications.

I just wanted to make it clear that I wasn’t a MS-or-die type

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Look for this situation to worsen if oil prices remain anywhere even close to where they currently are. Frankly, I’m not sure how the agricultural free trade folks are going to make their collective case as things progress, but you can be sure that the developing world will take a big hit. This is one of those points where the green energy lobby misses the mark with the downstream effects of their policies (think biofuel subsidies). How can scoring political points be acceptable when we’re starving a good chunk of the Third World?

Prediction: Drilling in ANWR and in protected offshore areas will be back on the table before the end of the year.
